Inaugurated in 2001 as part of Bogota’s Capital Network of Public Libraries, it has become an important social and cultural development center. It is surrounded by parks and leisure complexes making up the Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park.
Famous architect Rogelio Salmona’s design consists of a three-level circular structure surrounded by reflective pools. Its different spaces – in which exhibitions are also regularly held – are communicated through a system of internal and external ramps. A walk through its intercommunicated terraces offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding parks. The roofs are covered with ceramic tiles, as a reference to the Quimbaya civilization, a pre-Columbian culture
