Parlour. 2006
Concrete, C-print, glass
A photograph of part of an opulent reception room, complete with plush red chairs - seemingly but improbably the very space where the Shah of Iran staged photographs with esteemed guests such as Mao Tse Tung, Kemal Attaturk, or Konrad Adenauer next to an image of Adolf Hitler - is obscured by a slab of concrete. For the artist, the untold story of what went on in this room is enmeshed with an individual, fictitious interpretation. This confronts official accounts and recombines and reconfigures "facts" to present a new reading of how such histories are often arbitrary and instrumentalized.
