Karachi Series II. 2014
Installation, video, color, sound, photographs
The work is based on aesthetic reenactments that dwell upon the cosmopolitan history of Karachi, primarily considering how both melancholia and amnesia become etched into urban topography. The artist’s childhood memories of the metropolis’ old cinemas, Victorian architecture, colonial gardens, informal street economy, and its location by the sea converge with other narrative accounts. These encounters resonate as a map of conjecture - like rumors that never quite settle, but instead float as a collective whisper reimagining a city’s multiple pasts.
