Comparative Studies, Herbarium of Artificial Plants. 2002-ongoing
(Detail)
In his iconic work Baraya superimposes two forms of botanical representation: drawings made by (or for) explorers from the 18th and 19th centuries, and artificial flowers and plants mass-produced in factories for today’s global consumer market. The former are an index of an impulse to take possession of the world through scientific cataloging and documentation. The latter, on the other hand, represent a more ambiguous engagement with the visible world, which, in being meticulously imitated, is rendered devoid of any function, either representational or didactic.
