In the 19th century, the rear building of Palazzo Gritti on the Rio del Fontego with the entrance on the Campo della Confraternità was granted to the Franciscan monks. They had the colonnade, the so-called "Cavalcavia" (overpass, designed by G.A. Pigazzi), built as a connection to their monastery.
The portal on the east side is known to fans of the TV series Commissario Brunetti, based on the novels by Donna Leon, as the entrance to the Questura, the police headquarters. Uwe Kockisch in the role of the inspector repeatedly rushes from here across the square through the colonnades to the police boat on the canal, which takes him to his next assignment.
