A first pontoon bridge built in 1181 has been replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge. Several times it partly burned and collapsed. The current stone bridge was designed by Antonio da Ponte, completed in 1591. It is very similar to the previous wooden bridge, formed by two inclined ramps, with shops on each side, covered by a portico.
As one of the top tourist attractions of Venice, the Ponte di Rialto is always extremely overcrowded.
