The remains of two Byzantine churches can be seen on the north side, while a further church and a monastic building are found to the east.
When the Roman Empire converted to Christianity, Faynan became a bishopric and a center of pilgrimage to honor the martyrs who had died working as slaves in the mines for the Romans.
