The largest freestanding architectural complex in Petra did not serve religious worship, but was built as a representative royal reception hall, up from the end of the 1st century BC or beginning of the 1st century AD.

West of the 'Great Temple', after the annexation of the Nabataean Kingdom by the Roman Empire in 106 AD, a bath complex with 22 rooms was built. You can see its foundation walls on the right side of the picture (with a roofed part). More about it on the next page.
