The 39 m high and 25 m wide mausoleum dedicated to a Nabataean king or queen was hewn out of the rock probably during the second half of the reign of King Aretas IV (ruled 9 B.C. - 40 A.D.).
The Arabic name "Khazneh al-Fira'un" (Pharaoh's Treasury, short: al-Khazneh) originates from Bedouins who believed that an Egyptian pharaoh had hidden a treasure in the urn on the top.
