Built in 1918, the Main Building served as the official residence of the British commander of the Arab Legion, Colonel F. G. Peake, until 1938. It is said that Lawrence of Arabia was a guest at this house. Later it became a club for the British Officers until the Arabization of the Arab Legion in 1956. Used as a private school for girls for some years, it remained abandoned since 1978.

Bought by Darat al Funun in 1992, it was renovated in its original form by architect Ammar Khammash, including exhibition spaces, offices and a library.
