The monument was a gift from Uruguay to the city of Buenos Aires in 1936, on the occasion of the 400 years of the first foundation by Pedro de Mendoza. Realized in bronze by the Uruguayan artists Antonio Pena & Julio Vilamajó. The material came from the dismantling of an old ship and the melting down of 10 cent coins donated by schools from Montevideo.
