From the Museum of Modern Art to Parque Lezama

This itinerary of approx. 2 km goes around the southern area of the traditional San Telmo neighborhood. It is part of the historical center of the city, and maintains much of its architectural heritage. From the end of the 1970s on, with the widening of the San Juan Avenue and the construction of the highway 25 de Mayo, the area got separated (mainly in the perception of the visitors) from the touristic heart of San Telmo, around Plaza Dorrego with its antiquaries and bars.

To Parque Lezama

With the renovation of the former tobacco factory Nobleza Piccardo to host the Museo de Arte Moderno, and the establishing of the private museum MACBA in a new adjacent building, the San Juan Avenue has become the entrance gate to so-called Distrito de las Artes (Art District). Walking about 300 m along Defensa Street, crossing underneath the highway, strolling by the historical bars Británico and Hipopótamo, one reaches Parque Lezama. This beautiful park located at the top of the ravine which marks the former shore of the Rio de la Plata, originated in the luxury gardens which the landowner Gregorio Lezama commissioned European landscape architects to create for his private mansion in the second half of the 19th century, today the National Historical Museum.

Distrito de las Artes

With this long term development project, the Government of the City aims to transform a large area between Av. San Juan in San Telmo, and Av. Don Pedro de Mendoza in the South of La Boca, into a district of cultural and touristic appeal by fostering the artistic sector in all disciplines, promoting private investment, and the improvement of the urbanization and infrastructure. More and more, the Art District is becoming the home of public and private museums and cultural centers, art galleries, artist in residencies, studios of artists, theatres, bookshops, etc.
