Trankat residency artists at La Valette-du-Var, 16 Sept. - 25 Oct. 2014, curated by Bérénice Saliou. Panel: Artistic Emergences and Mobility in the Mediterranean Area, 16 Sept. in Marseille.
Sep 2014While the Trankat Episode # 1 exhibition is still circulating within the network of the French Institutes Morocco, Trankat Episode # 2 is already announced at Le Moulin Art Space, in La Valette-du-Var in South of France, where it will presented from 16 September to 25 October 2014.
The exhibition brings together works by Said Afifi, Simohammed Fettaka, ismaël, Mourad Krinah and Olivier Millagou, created during their residency at Trankat at the heart of the Medina of Tétouan, on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco.
Whereas traditional zelliges (ceramic tilework) become wallpaper, the ancient medina is hopelessly engulfed by concrete, characteristic of modernist architecture. The lighted calligraphy that illuminates and guides us, actually draws the word "darkness". Snapshots of the city of Tétouan, taken blindly thanks to disposable cameras shows an already outdated contemporareity, tinged with nostalgia. The sounds of dice players, traditional musicians, fountain or loom recorded in the Moroccan Rif region propagate in a superposition of slow and distorted soundscapes that plunge the show in an electro-indus atmosphere worthy of a Berlin underground club. Far away from folkloric or traditionalist views, the works created by the five artists from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and South of France are gathered by and for the artistic cause, that can sometimes transcend boundaries. They demonstrate with some gravity of a Maghreb experiencing profound changes and of a fervent and energetic youth, resolutely looking to fight their way through.
The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated newspaper recalling the residencies and the creation processes in Tétouan and featuring a written exchange between the artists and curator Bérénice Saliou.

Panel Discussion:
Artistic Emergences and Mobility in the Mediterranean Area
To go further, a panel discussion entitled "Artistic Emergences and Mobility in the Mediterranean Area" is organised at Villa Mediterranée in Marseilles. Many artistic residences have emerged these past few years, particularly in the Maghreb region. What does this model respond to? How do these structures operate locally and what support do they bring to artists? From the point of view of artists, what are their living, working and promotion conditions, and how do these residencies respond to their needs? What are the issues underlying behind the concept of mobility?
The panel discussion will also be an opportunity to debate about the current artistic situation in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia following the political events of 2011.
Speakers include:
Said Afifi, Simohammed Fettaka, ismaël, Mourad Krinah and Olivier Millagou, artists in Residence at Trankat in 2014.
Olfa Feki, curator and co-founder of the Tunisian House for Image.
Bérénice Saliou, co-founder and director of Trankat Art Residency.
Zineb Sedira, artist, founder of Artists in Residence Algier.
Moderation:
Olivia Marsaud, journalist, reporter specialised on Africa, the Arab world and Brasil. She regularly works with Jeune Afrique, Afrique magazine and RFI and is Chief Editor at Africa 24 Magazine since 2010.
