Levant is a geographic term that refers to the lands of the Eastern Mediterranean originating from the Latin levare, to lift or raise. In English levant also means to flee one’s debts. Both meanings intertwine here in this totem as a ‘mirage’ at once uplifting and mired in tradition.
The tiles used in this work were sourced from the same factory in Nablus that made the original stone tiles used in this exhibition space and throughout the main building of Darat al Funun more than 80 years ago. Today, this factory like many of Palestine’s traditional crafts, is being threatened with closure due to political and economic restrictions and increasing imports from China.
