El Badi Palace was constructed up from 1578 as the palace of Saadian Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. Its name translates as 'incomparable', at the time its beauty, opulence and architectural grace were legendary.

Around 1700, the palace was stripped of its ornamentation to furnish the palace of Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail in the new capital of Meknes. Today only the bare bones of its former glory can be seen.

In September 2013 opened at El Badi Palace the temporary home of the Marrakech Museum for Photography and Visual Arts (MMP+), while the permanent museum building is constructed. The MMP+ is dedicated to exhibiting the Moroccan, North African and international lens-based and traditional fine art.
