Highlighted exhibition, part of 2013 Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture. 12 January - 7 April 2013, Tour-Panorama, Marseille.
Jan 2013Initially created by the European Union in 1985, the European Capital of Culture title is a unique label. For selected cities, it means a year of culture, festivities and creation. In 2013, Marseille Provence and the Slovakian city of Košice will host interactions between all forms of artistic expression and gatherings of people from all walks of life. International cultural events, shows, exhibitions, participative projects, and festive events will showcase these regions’ unique cultural traditions.
Marseille-Provence 2013 hopes to create a creative platform for exchanges between the cultures of both shores that is open to artists of all disciplines, whether European or Mediterranean. These exchanges are central to the programme – they are the theme underlying the tale of 2013, Sharing the South.
Marseille-Provence, European Capital of Culture in 2013 celebrates its Opening Weekend on 12-13 January 2013. Among the numerous events and exhibitions, one of the highlights is:
Ici, ailleurs (Here, Elsewhere)
12 January - 7 April 2013
Tour-Panorama, Friche La Belle de Mai, Marseille
The Tour-Panorama – a new space for contemporary art – will host the works of 38 internationally renowned artists, most of whom were born in the 1960s and 1970s in different Mediterranean countries.
The exhibition will present a selection of existing works and a number of pieces especially created for the occasion. Some question the notions of identity, citizenship, the self and the other, memory and archives. Several seek to share the experience of emigration, exile and displacement. Others focus on the Mediterranean landscape. What do they say about the condition of the world and the changes to come? What do they tell us about our identity in an age of globalisation? How do they depict personal tales interfaced with history?
