Focusing on the theme "City: Chaos and Magic", the 1st IFSAK International Istanbul Biennial of Photography continues to host exhibitions, workshops and events by world-renowned photographers and academics until the 31st of October.
IFSAK (Istanbul Association of Amateur Photography and Cinema), the organizer of the well-respected Istanbul Photo Days over the past 20 years, took the scope of the Turkey's biggest photography event to a whole new level by initiating the first photography biennial of Turkey.
The Biennial stands out with its extensive use of public spaces, such as parks, avenues, bridges and public ferries; and its multiple curators, a novelty for the Turkish photography scene. The historical Ottoman Imperial Mint buildings within the Topkapi Palace remain the main venue of the Biennial, accommodating some of its most important exhibitions, such as works by Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Alexander Rodchenko.
Another remarkable exhibition of the biennial takes place on a public ferry-boat that travels from port to port over the Bosphorus. Curated by the prominent Turkish photographer Haluk Cobanoglu, the exhibition presents works of world famous photojournalists, including Dario Mitidieri, Nicos Economopoulos, Stanley Greene, Alexandra Boulat, Jonas Bendiksen and Goksin Varan.
An international forum will also be held between 6-8 October. Various photographers and academics including Michael Ware, David Bate, Victor Burgin, Sandy King and Laura Padgett will participate in a series of conferences and panels discussing photography and contemporary arts. The Biennial also includes collaborations with other institutions, one of which is the Goethe Institut sponsored exhibition "Distance and Proximity", displaying works of German contemporary artists such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, and Axel Hütte.
